“Gerontology is the study, the knowledge of human aging, from birth to end of life. Here we strive to deliver services and programs that address the challenges of aging and elevate the quality of life for individuals aging in community.” Brenda Vazquez, Director
The Dennis Center for Active Living (DCAL), located in South Dennis, Massachusetts, is operated by the Town of Dennis Council on Aging. The center provides diverse programs and services for older adults, care partners and adults with cognitive impairment.
Opened on October 19, 2021, the expanded facility includes a 10,000 square foot wing featuring a new entrance, reception area, DCAL Café, DCAL Salon, Rolling Racks Thrift Shop, and a commercial kitchen connected to the main Ballroom. The lower level hosts Evergreen Fitness Studios, the Golden Age Program day and respite care programs, and a dining room overlooking the courtyard. Renovations to the original building were completed in 2024, expanding the center to 22,000 square feet. New additions include a human services wing, outreach offices, visiting agency spaces, a performance theatre, digital learning lab, dining room, nursing room, billiards/card game room, and outdoor courtyard.
As part of the AARP Network of Age and Dementia Friendly States and Communities since 2022, and a signatory of the Massachusetts Age-Friendly Best Practice Compact since 2018, DCAL aligns with goals identified in the 2019 Barnstable County Healthy Aging Report. Programs emphasize health promotion and community engagement, offering:
- Fitness & Dance classes: Yoga, Zumba, ballroom dance parties, line dancing, strength training, and balance classes.
- Health and Wellness: evidence-based fall prevention, memory training, guided equipment orientations, mindfulness, foot care and hearing clinics.
- Social and Recreational Activities: monthly events, field trips, games, groups and clubs.
- Support Services: educational seminars, personal development programs, social support and transportation for those in need.
The center welcomes residents of Dennis and neighboring towns aged 60 and older, as well as adults with disabilities. Membership is free with registration required to access programs and services.
