Stay Connected: Celebrating Social Wellness Month and Beyond

July is Social Wellness Month, a perfect time to reflect on the importance of nurturing our relationships and building a supportive community. For older adults, staying socially active is a key ingredient for mental and emotional health. Whether it’s through a shared hobby or a simple conversation, these connections help combat isolation and keep our community vibrant. There are many ways to get involved and grow your circle right here at the center.

To help you stay engaged this summer, consider these meaningful ways to connect:

  • Joining a local club: Many senior centers host book clubs, gardening groups, or card games to bring people together. We host all three and more!
  • Volunteering: Sharing your unique skills or time is a wonderful way to meet like-minded people while giving back. Check in at our front desk to become a volunteer!
  • Embracing technology: Use video calls or social media to bridge the gap with family and friends who live far away. Stay tuned for info about our new Digital Literacy Learning Lab!
  • Intergenerational activities: Spend time with grandchildren or join youth mentorship programs to share wisdom across generations.
  • Weekly Lunch: Sharing a sit-down meal at DCAL is a wonderful way to connect with neighbors, swap stories, and build lasting friendships over healthy, homestyle food. It’s more than a meal—it’s a weekly chance to feel seen, supported, and part of a caring community.

If you are hesitant to take the step to join activities and events please let us know and we can connect you with a volunteer at DCAL who can show you the ropes!

As we look ahead, mark your calendars for Friday, August 21, 2026 which is National Senior Citizens Day. This special day, first proclaimed in 1988, is dedicated to honoring the lifelong achievements and diverse contributions that older adults make to our society. We invite you to join us in celebrating the wisdom and experience you bring to our community every day.
